Follow Me! – Chapter 5, I WANT THE COWHORSE

“Aunt Trudy, it’s hopeless”.

“Sorry, what”?

“It’s not gonna work. I can’t do anything with that horse”.

“That was fast”.

“She doesn’t listen. I whispered to her, and I talked to her… I even showed her… I ran around like she’s supposed to! She just stood there like a stone. Like a big dumb rock.”

“She probably listens more than you think, but it doesn’t matter. You’re at your starting point, Hazel”.

Nope, her aunt didn’t understand.

Aunt Trudy said, “Don’t fret and don’t give up”.

“I’m not. I just need a different horse.  I’m thinking, the cowhorse.  It will listen to me”.

“Who?”  Aunt Trudy looked puzzled for a second, but shook her head and moved on.  “Nevermind. Why do you think another horse would behave differently?

“ ’Cuz this one doesn’t listen. I need one that listens.”

“She listens, but she might not understand you. It’s still OK. That’s a good place to start… because it’s where you are.”

“No, it’s not. It’s an awful place! It’s not where I want to be!”

Her aunt set the bridle down and said, “That’s the real problem, isn’t it? It’s not where you want to be. But, I’m telling you, it’s not a bad thing. If you want a good working relationship with Maggie Star, or a cowhorse, or any other horse, then you’re gonna have to work for it. Remember? One step at a time?” She looked at Hazel, questioningly.

Hazel’s outburst had felt so right, but her aunt’s response was all wrong. Blah, blah blah, blah blah… And she was still talking and not hearing Hazel at all:

Hazel with Journal

“Working with horses is a journey. It’s not like flipping on a light. Part of what you need to learn is to enjoy the journey, even its challenges. If you skip parts, you won’t end up where you wanna be. Worse yet, you won’t even understand what you’re missing. So don’t fight this, embrace it.”

This conversation had somehow gone all out of Hazel’s control. Her voice thinned into a whine. She said, “I don’t want a journey! I want to ride. I want my horse to be my friend and to listen to me,… and I want ta ride… the cowhorse.”

“Well, you’re not there yet. I won’t help you take a short-cut. I’d be cheating you out of some of the best things that horse has to offer.”
